About the Project
The new childcare facility on Balmoral at Great-West Life YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg is an exemplary case study highlighting the success of adaptive re-use of heritage buildings. Once vacant and derelict, the Milner House now sits at the heart of a much-needed facility providing 100 licenced childcare spots.
We kept and refurbished major key historic elements such as the feature wood staircase, fireplace, millwork, wood ceilings and mouldings, and refinished existing floors. Not only has this endeavour restored the Milner House to again have a useful life, but it also transformed the building to be among the leaders of sustainable, energy-conserving and healthy buildings in Canada with a LEED Platinum certification.
